Two-year results indicate that a procedure combining micro-incision cataract surgery with implantation of an Ex-press glaucoma drainage implant provides a safe, simple and effective way to for reduce IOP and the need for anti-glaucoma medication in eyes with open angle glaucoma and cataract, said Romeo Altafini MD, "S.Bassiano Hospital", Bassano del Grappa, Vicenza,– Italy.
In 48 eyes of 41 patients with open angle glaucoma and cataract who underwent the combined procedure, the IOP at two year follow-up was 11.3 mmHg, compared to 24.7 mmHg preoperatively . Furthermore, only six eyes needed one IOP-lowering medication to maintain the IOP at the correct level.
