A new examination is being developed to certify excellence of ophthalmologists working in the cataract and refractive subspecialty. The curriculum and exam structure is being developed by the ESCRS, with the European Board of Ophthalmology (EBO) providing certification for successful candidates. This follows the success of a similar examination recently developed by the European Glaucoma Society and the EBO. An examination board has been set up and is currently developing the curriculum. The examination will certify excellence, rather than just competency of candidates, and offers an opportunity for mid-career ophthalmologists with broad and advanced experience to prove their knowledge and ability to act independently in making diagnoses, and deciding on the best course of action in a range of clinical situations. The examination will be open to experienced specialists from across Europe. While accreditation offers prestige associated with achieving an independent and high-level certification, there are also a range of practical benefits including career progression and the ability to travel for work opportunities. The exam will consist of written and oral sections, in which the candidate’s knowledge will be rigorously tested, both in theory and practical decision making. The first exam will take place during the XXXV Congress of the ESCRS in Lisbon next year.
