New advances in nutrition and eye health
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of visual loss in older adults in Europe, the USA and developed countries. Epidemiological studies over the last two decades have brought to lightsome of the risk factors associated with AMD, including age,ethnicity, diet, nutritional status, smoking, hypertension, and genetic markers. Although anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) agents have transformed the treatment of neovascular AMD in recent years, many patients continue to lose vision and there is currently no treatment for the atrophic form of AMD.
