17th Congress of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) opens with commitment to widen educational activities

The 17th Congress of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) was officially opened in Amsterdam, The Netherlands today.

SOE president Gabriel van Rij said he hoped this year's congress would help to promote the aims of the society which are to provide the best possible treatments for patients, to promote ophthalmology and to stimulate cooperation between ophthalmologists and national organisations.

"There are many countries in Europe," said Prof van Rij, "with different languages, different training systems and different medical systems.

"We want to widen the educational activities," he said, "and we are thankful for the support of other European organisations."

Prof van Rij said all the national societies, big and small, in the East and West were all important members of SOE and he also stressed the importance of the sub-specialty societies that had helped to organise the meeting.

The master of ceremonies at the opening ceremony was SOE Board member Gunther Grabner. The other guest speakers included Saskia Imhof, president of the Nederlands Oogeheelkundig Gezelschop, Michael Brennan, president of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, Gerhard Lang, president of WOC 2010 and Albert Francheskhetti, president of the European Contact Lens Society.

A musical interlude was presented by Lucas Jussen and Arthur Jussen two of of the Netherlands most outstanding young musicians who received a large round of applause for their performance.

A detailed report on the opening ceremony will appear on Sunday June 14 in ET Today, the official SOE Congress newspaper published by EuroTimes.

The newspaper is free of charge and will be distributed to delegates at the conference
