Prof Tassignon delivers keynote SOE lecture
Marie-José Tassignon MD, PhD, professor and chair, Department of Ophthalmology, Antwerp University delivered the keynote lecture on the first day of the 17th Congress of the European Society of Ophthalmology (SOE) in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
In her lecture, Prof Tassignon discussed the criteria for achieving refractive cataract surgery and progress that has been made toward reaching this goal.
Currently, she said, outcomes of cataract surgery are outstanding thanks to developments in surgical technique, phacoemulsification platforms, and IOL technology featuring “complicated optics” that reduce spherical aberration, treat pre-existing astigmatism, and/or provide good reading vision.
"Ultimately, however, for cataract surgery to truly become refractive surgery, surgeons will need to be able to restore accommodation and provide patients with quality of vision outcomes immediately postoperatively and over the long-term,"said Prof Tassignon.
A full report on Prof Tassignon's lecture will appear in ET Today, the official newspaper of the SOE Congress, which will be published on Sunday 14 June.
