‘IntraBubble’ technique delivers promising results
A variation of the big-bubble technique in deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) assisted by femtosecond laser has delivered promising early results with excellent graft adhesion and good refractive outcomes, according to Luca Buzzonetti MD.
“IntraBubble, linking all the advantages of femtosecond technology and big bubble DALK, represents a new possible application of IntraLase that could partially standardise big bubble DALK and make easier the intraoperative conversion to penetrating keratoplasty, resulting in a better fit of the donor cornea and good refractive outcomes,” Dr Buzzonetti MD said during the XXVII Congress of the ESCRS.
15 eyes with keratoconus were treated using a 60 kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser (AMO). A full lamellar cut was performed 100 microns from the thinnest corneal point and a mushroom lamella was then created at the same depth. After removing the lamella, air was injected into the residual stroma to achieve a big bubble.
“The IntraBubble technique can effectively standardise the BB technique in DALK, reducing the risk of intraoperative complications and delivering good refractive outcomes,” he said.
