Anisometropia in general population may be higher than thought.
A significant proportion of the population have asymmetrical refractive error and visual acuity and both refractive error and visual acuity appear to change significantly with age, particularly during the sixth decade of life, according to the findings of a large retrospective study presented at the XXVII Congress of the ESCRS.
“Information collected in this study will help planning of future studies intended for vision correction at different stages of life. Slight inter-ocular asymmetry in refractive and visual values after 50 years of age could reflect asymmetric onset and progression of certain ocular conditions or changes in corneal and internal astigmatism,” said the study’s lead author, Santiago Garcia-Lazaro MD, University of Valencia, Spain.
The study reviewed the refractive and visual acuity data from 12,000 patients obtained from cycloplegic refraction to provide a comparison between the values obtained from different age groups in 10 years intervals and between right and left eyes.
The refraction and visual acuity were fairly similar in all age groups although there was an asymmetry of 1.0 D or more in 11 per cent and 2.0 D or more in four per cent.
The researchers also found that the spherical equivalent was significantly different among different age groups (p<0,05) and that the J0 astigmatic component appeared to change from positive values (0.07 D), among patients 40 to 50 years of age and younger to negative values -0,18 D for those 50 to 60 years and older (p<0.001). The difference in astigmatism between the two age groups corresponded to a reduction in visual acuity from 0.98 to 0.92.
Moreover, compared to the group that was 20 to 30 years of age as a reference, older patients showed a continuous worsening in VA. Another finding of the study was that inter-ocular comparison revealed the presence of apparent asymmetry in astigmatic components J0 and J45 for all age groups.
